Years Working Professionally

The Early Days

From selling small drawings at school for pocket money at 12 to opening my own tattoo studio at 19, art went from something I loved doing to the career I’d always wanted.

I spent the next 18 years specialising in portraits, alongside drawing commissions for weddings, memorials and family memories. By my 20s, I’d created my dream job around making art.

From Hyperrealism to My Own Style

For 20 years, I created hyperrealistic portraits using the grid method. But eventually, I felt trapped and completely reliant on it. Despite my experience, I felt like I was cheating — like a fraud.

So I focused on what the grid had never taught me — the fundamentals. Learning a structural approach lit a fire under me that I’d never felt with the grid. And, to my surprise, it also gave me the skills to develop my own style.

Passing It On

After building a life around my art, I turned my attention to artists who’d put drawing on hold for years because of life, work and family — helping them become the artists they’d always wanted to be.

I’m sharing what I’ve learned from 25+ years of creating portraits, helping you avoid years of trial and error, recognise what needs fixing sooner, and be truly proud of what you create.

Student Progress

“Two of my friends saw this and the last portrait, reached out to me and said, ‘What happened to you? Your drawing got so much better all of a sudden.’ You have taken your charcoal drawing to the next level! Gosh, I just got what I was missing, that is all, but that is huge!”

Feeling Like An Artist

One Month Of Progress

“My win is that I reflected on what I did for the last month and found a huge progress I made from the baseline drawing through to the last portrait. It was beyond my expectations for only one month study.”

Foundations, Likeness & Values

“The greatest thing I learned about foundations, likeness, and value is that there is a methodology that puts certainty into the process. I also found that I have a tendency to stay very light and not fully commit to the depth of the values. I also learned I am not confined to the errors of the foundation and can improve likeness later in the process if necessary.”

New Commission

“I got a commission from one of my friends for his dog’s portraits after posting this, which was meant to be a trial for me.”

Student Feedback

“Your stepwise approach is really going to help me focus on one step at a time rather than anxiously tweaking bits of a portrait trying to find likeness. I learned more in this video than I did in a recent three-day workshop with a famous artist!”

Hear From Some Of Our Artists

Their experiences inside the mentorship.

“Before joining Adam's mentorship, I was missing personal feedback and a community where I felt safe. Since joining, my proportions have improved so much, my portraits look more realistic, I've even had an exhibition and commissions!”

Artist sharing her mentorship experience

“After 35 years working in music, I returned to drawing as retirement approached. I struggled with likeness and didn't know how to improve. Since joining Adam's mentorship, my approach has completely changed. I didn't think I could draw so well.”

Artist sharing his mentorship experience

“Before joining, I struggled with proportions and couldn't figure out how to correct my mistakes. Adam's personal feedback feels like sitting side by side, getting direct advice on every drawing. I just can't believe I did these myself, I never imagined that would happen!”

Have Any Questions?

This mentorship is for beginner and intermediate portrait artists using graphite or charcoal. For people who have returned to drawing after years away, or who have been practising for a while but feel they've reached a point where they're no longer improving and want professional guidance. If you're serious about getting better and share your drawings and apply feedback, this is designed for you.
Not at all. You don't need to be an experienced portrait artist to join. We work through the fundamentals of portrait drawing, starting with simple tonal shapes, proportions and the foundation of likeness before moving into more detailed portraits. Whether you're just starting out or have been drawing for years, the personal feedback helps you understand what you need to improve in your own work.
As you work through the exercises and portraits, you share photos of your drawings inside our private community. I personally review your work and record video feedback showing you what's working, where you're going wrong and exactly what to focus on next. I can also draw directly over your submitted image so you can clearly see the corrections I'm explaining. I'm active in the community daily, so you're not left trying to figure everything out on your own.
You'll get access to my complete step-by-step portrait drawing process, including exercises, full portrait demonstrations and real-time draw-along lessons. You'll also receive six months of personalised video feedback, access to our private artist community, and a weekly live group session where you can ask questions and get additional guidance. The mentorship also includes my drawing software, which helps you simplify reference photographs into tonal shapes and check your drawing against the original reference. You'll keep lifetime access to the training and software.
There's no fixed number of hours you have to complete each week. You can work through the lessons and exercises around your own schedule, whether you're retired, working or balancing other commitments. What matters most is consistency. The more you practise, share your work and apply the feedback, the more opportunity you'll have to improve. The weekly live sessions are also recorded if you can't attend.
The mentorship focuses on portrait drawing with graphite and charcoal. I'll show you the materials I use and how I prepare them, but you don't need to replace everything you already own. If you have your preferred pencils, charcoal, paper and basic drawing equipment, you can use those while learning the process.
The six months cover your personal mentorship period, including my ongoing video feedback, the private community and weekly live sessions. After the six months, you'll still have lifetime access to the step-by-step training, drawing demonstrations, software and any future updates. If you'd like to continue receiving personal feedback and guidance from me, you can renew for another six months. Many of my students choose to continue because they can see how much they're improving and want to keep building on that progress.
The first step is to apply and book a call with me. We'll talk about where you are with your drawing, what you're struggling with and what you'd like to achieve over the next six months. I'll explain how the mentorship works, answer your questions and help you decide whether it's the right fit for you. There's no obligation to join just because we've had a conversation.
